Summary: I mainly deal with commercial mediation and contract mediation within the field of distribution and transport law. My style is facilitative and I have been described as an “active listener” who “properly grasps what really matters for parties” and “encourages creative solution finding outside of the box”. I work in English and Dutch. I lecture facilitative mediation at the VUB University of Brussels (BICCS department) and continuously challenge myself to be up to date with ongoing evolutions. With a wide number of publications on various aspects of mediation and other methods of dispute resolution, my aim is to help improve practice standards. I also lecture on the peaceful settlement of disputes in diplomatic conflict situations for the Brussels Diplomatic Academy.

Summary: Mediation, like the sketches in Monty Python, is like theatre. In order to succeed, the actors must keep the scene going forward without denying the other actors the opportunity to be heard. Arguments work on the stage provided they are done in a way that maintains the flow of the scene, allows conversation to be fluid, and doesn’t box in the other players.

Nationality: Latvian
Address: Loeverstraat 9, 9170 Sint-Gillis-Waas, Belgium
Email: maria.boicova@gmail.com
Mediation Languages: English, Russian, Latvian. French and Dutch are possible for additional communication
Summary: My mediation experience is built on a legal background with ten years of experience in intellectual property matters. Internationally educated in law and business administration (MBA) and subsequently practicing across several countries I developed an aptitude for working with different nationalities and cultures. Clients I advised have frequently opted for an evaluative style of mediation which, as a lawyer and patent and trademark attorney, I had a chance to refine. Fortunately, I am also experienced in the facilitative style which in my view better reflects the true spirit of mediation. However, I leave the choice of style to the parties in order to better serve their needs and interests. Being fluent in Russian, Latvian and English I conduct mediations in these languages; while also French and Dutch can be used for additional communication.
